Some of The Most Commonly Used NDT Techniques

There was a time when people were not really aware of job opportunities in the nondestructive testing (NDT) field. Due to their unawareness, a lot of people missed working in this amazing career field. But today, countless number of Americans are finding good jobs in the NDT realm. One of the major contributing factors in this has been the growing number of top-quality NDT schools such as the NDT Consultancy Services. Top schools can teach you all the key NDT techniques that are in high demand in various industries. In this blog, we will tell you about some of the most commonly used NDT techniques. Let’s take a look at them.

  • Electromagnetic Testing Within this testing comes several testing techniques such as remote field testing, eddy current testing, and alternating current field measurement. If there’s any requirement of checking surface and sub-surface flaws, electromagnetic testing should be chosen as it can effectively and quickly detect those flaws. In these testing techniques, an electromagnetic field is generated. If the material being tested has any flaw, a measurable response gets created.
  • Thermal Infrared Testing In this testing technique, thermal imaging devices are employed to measure and map variation in temperature on the material’s surface. Even slight variation in temperature lets engineers know about cracks, voids, or inclusions present in the material.
  • Ultrasonic Testing Small flaws are often the most difficult to detect flaws in a material. One of the most widely used NDT techniques to find deep and small flaws is ultrasonic testing. A transducer is used in this testing technique to create very high frequency sound waves. These waves are created through the material. Engineers recognize there is a flaw when there is a discontinuity in the flow of the waves. The sonic energy gets reflected back as soon as it comes in contact with a crack or some other imperfection in the material being tested.

So, there you have it. These are some of the most commonly used NDT techniques. Apart from these, liquid penetrant testing and magnetic particle testing are also heavily used in many different industries. In the former, defects are found by applying liquid dye penetrant to the surface of a material. In the latter, the material is magnetized and if there’s any imperfection present in and around the material, leakages start to occur in the magnetic flux.
