An Overview of What an NDT Technician Does And How to Become One

If you’re into product design and development, a career as an NDT technician may be suitable for you. A non-destructive testing (NDT) technician inspects products to determine flaws and errors using various technological tools. They perform various testing methods to evaluate data about a system or material without causing damage or permanent alteration to it. NDT technicians must receive their Non Destructive Testing Certification and be extremely knowledgeable of the various testing methods in order to thoroughly analyze the material under study.

To test and write reports on the structural components of a product during the development process, an NDT technician needs to perform a wide range of tasks. These include:

Testing

  • Performing tests to measure corrosion resistance, and strength and stability with respect to variations in stress and temperature
  • Detecting surface defects that may cause corrosion
  • Analyzing areas susceptible to corrosion and other prone areas
  • Measuring the thickness of metal surfaces using ultrasonic testing devices
  • Detecting hidden flaws such as cracks and metal fatigue
  • Identifying defects in metal parts particularly in welds and joints that can potentially weaken the parts or cause damage
  • Using X-rays to inspect internal components
  • Detecting evidence of separation in an object’s layers
  • Formulating new techniques for improved testing process

Interpreting Results

  • Detecting the cause of problems in structures and determining the appropriate method needed to fix them
  • Advising customers on the safety level of structures
  • Conducting additional tests if initials tests fail to produce conclusive results
  • Analyzing and comparing test results with similar products

Writing Reports

  • Creating design drawings along with descriptions of the structure of components
  • Elaborating specification of products and structures
  • Preparing and distributing reports to customers
  • Formulating plans for repairing damaged structures
  • Documenting the tests conducted along with their results.

Using Equipment

  • Assembling equipment used in NDT processes
  • Maintaining and calibrating equipment to produce accurate results
  • Repairing damaged testing equipment

How to Become an NDT Technician

The good thing about becoming an NDT technician is that while degrees in fields such as material science, mechanical engineering, and product development are useful, interested candidates can qualify for non-destructive testing schools with a high school diploma. These schools provide classes that are highly interactive and informative, and led by school instructors with years of real experience working in various industries. Students get one-on-one interactions and personal support that allows them to learn the technical skills and knowledge required by the role.

After finishing a basic or Level 1 non-destructive testing certification course, technicians can increase their technical knowledge and ability by clearing higher levels of certification. NDT technicians with Level III certification have the technical skill set to develop, qualify, and approve NDT analysis techniques and procedures. They can also train NDT Level I and II technicians.
